[cops theme plays in the distance]
A small string of light filtered through the tiniest crack in the roof of the attic, specks of dust floated through the air giving off a musky effect that would make it hard for anyone to breath easily. In the center of the floor a small boy sat with pieces of paper scattered around him with an assortment of broken, colored crayons. The pictures on each page were surprisingly similar, all including a boy with colorful wings sprouting from his back and taking flight into the sky. The boy, pondering his pictures, held a crayon up to his lips and tapped slightly as he stared down at his masterpieces. He looked as though he was about to add a few minor details to another picture as a voice called to him from down the stairs “Matthew!” A woman’s husky, smoke filled voice echoed throughout the room, “Get your lazy ass down here and clean up the damn Kitchen!” Matthew frighteningly dropped his crayon from his lips and quickly covered his sketches with a cloth that had been draped over the window seal. He rushed down the stairs in a hurry, knowing if his guardians saw him drawing he would be beaten again and he never knew what would set them off.
An older, larger woman stood at the end of the stairs tapping her foot and looking down at Matthew with a grave face. Matthew halted quickly before running into her. Looking up at the tall woman he tried to keep the fear that was shaking in his eyes hidden, “I’m sorry Mrs. Kinney I was on my way to clean it I just…” He paused biting his lip trying to come up with an excuse “I was only cleaning the attic and I thought that might take priority.” He nodded quickly hoping that this would appease her and he could get away with minor damage, hopefully returning to his safe hovel just up the stairs. Mrs. Kinney gritted her teeth looking as though she was buying it before raising her arm above her head and bringing it down upon the little boy’s soft cheek. Matthew recoiled slightly but kept a straight face, already use to the abuse at only seven years old. The older woman rubbing her hand huffed to herself “Nothing is priority unless I say, you useless child.” Her words felt like venom to Matthew, stinging worse than his reddening cheek but he nodded slowly “Yes ma’am…” Trailing his voice off as she pushed him into the kitchen, “I expect this entire room to be cleaned before my husband gets home from work” She narrowed her eyes slightly before finishing “Otherwise the belt is coming out and you know how Mr. Kinney enjoys to take out his anger after a long day at work.” Matthew took a deep breath before sighing with a small nod “I understand”
